1da62d13-9b9f-4b50-86b5-04e2b811ae3d_mThe 12th of March at 12 PM, climate minister Connie Hedegaard set in motion the 75-meter-high Vestas wind turbine in front of Bella Center to produce power. The starting signal took place in connection with the first of six climate conferences to precede Denmark's hosting of the UN climate change summit.

At 10:30 AM climate minister Connie Hedegaard, together with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, launched one of the world's largest ever interdisciplinary climate conferences in Bella Center. Under the title "Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions", 2,000 participants from nearly 80 countries will gather for the next three days to discuss the latest knowledge concerning climate change.

At 12 PM the climate minister shifted focus to the 75-meter-high Vestas wind turbine, which, like a clear sign of the winter's big climate summit in Bella Center, started producing power. The impressive wind turbine will come to produce no less than 1,600,000 kilowatt hours over the next year, which translates to enough power for approx. 300 average Danish households for an entire year.

"Vestas has set up a measuring station in our front hall that constantly shows how much power wind turbines in Denmark are producing. A very interesting sight, no less for the many guests that we will receive in connection with different climate conferences from now until the COP15 in early December", explains Arne Bang Mikkelsen, Managing Director of Bella Center.

"Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions", which is hosted by the University of Copenhagen, is namely only one of six climate events that will take place on Bella Center grounds over the next six months;

  • On 16-18 March 1,700 people will take part in "Carbon Market", organised by Point Carbon.
  • On 2-3 May 600-700 children and young people from around the world will learn about climatic conditions in the past, present and future. "Children's Climate Call" is organised by FIRST Scandinavia, in collaboration with LEGO Group.
  • On 24-26 May Mandag Morgen will host the "World Business Summit on Climate Change", with the participation of 1,000 international business leaders from the top 500 countries.
  • On 2-4 June 1,500 municipal and regional politicians, leading officials and directors from Denmark and elsewhere will gather for the "Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit", organised by the National Association for Local Authorities in Denmark.
  • On 7-8 September 1,000 engineers and researchers active in the field of climate and sustainable energy will come together at "Nordic Climate Solutions 2009" - organiser: Nidab.

On 7-18 December 2009 members of government and officials from 192 countries will meet at Bella Center to discuss the progress of the climate convention at COP15.  The ultimate goal is an ambitious global climate agreement for the period after 2012, when the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol comes to an end.
