FIRST Scandinavia’s mission and objective is to ”increase children’s interest in science and technology through engaging real-life projects”.
The main project of the foundation is the science and technology tournament FIRST LEGO League (FLL) – see www.firstlegoleague.org .
In 2008 140,000 children from 49 countries worldwide take part in the tournament. In addition to increasing children’s interest in science and technology, this program also develops children’s skills in problem solving, innovation, and team building.
FLL is a theme-based tournament. Each year a new challenge is released and over the years children have been working with such varied themes as Mission Mars, NanoQuest (nano technology), Ocean Odessey (protection of waters) and No Limits (accessibility for individuals with disabilities).
The 2008/2009 challenge is called Climate Connections and deals with climate change. With the COP15 (world climate summit) being held in Denmark in 2009, FIRST Scandinavia found it natural to host the 2009 FLL Open Championship (world final) there as well.
In addition to the FLL Open Championship on Climate Connections, there will be another track - Climate Actions.
Together they will form the Children’s Climate Call. Please see Tournament – Children’s Climate Call for further information.
By hosting Children’s Climate Call we will show to the world that children not only will, but also can contribute constructively and positively to the issues facing the world today – in this particular case to climate challenges.
We expect 600-700 children/youth and 200-300 guests from up to 49 nations to take part in Children’s Climate Call and we shall do our best to give all a great experience! We are sure you will be impressed with these highly skilled youngsters.
We look forward to seeing you in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 1 through 3, 2009.
